iZone International: Former WikiLeaks members start a new project – OpenLeaks

Even as WikiLeaks continues to suffer under the interests of world governments, key members of the project are jumping ship and leaving Julian Assange behind to form a new project, dubbed OpenLeaks, which should be up on the web soon, according to Swedish news site DN.se. An insider apparently told DN, “The two organisations are similar in that aspect that both are focusing on providing means for whistleblowers to anonymously provide the public with information.”

The main difference with OpenLeaks will be in the approach to publishing materials and greater management oversight. This is not the first time that dissent inside WikiLeaks has been talked about, and even before Assange’s arrest recently, the New York Times had published a profile on Assange with accounts from former members of the WikiLeaks teams.

The key difference shall be that instead of acting as an open platform like WikiLeaks, the new site will act as an intermediary between the whistleblowers and other organisations. At the same time, organisations like the US military are taking steps such as banning the use of USB drives to prevent leaks like those that are driving world controversy today.

An insider told DN, “All editorial control and responsibility rests with the publishing organisation. We will, as far as possible, take the role of the messenger between the whistleblower and the organisation the whistleblower is trying to cooperate with.”

“As a result of our intention not to publish any document directly and in our own name, we do not expect to experience the kind of political pressure which WikiLeaks is under at this time. In that aspect, it is quite interesting to see how little of politicians’ anger seems directed at the newspapers using WikiLeaks sources.”
