Close on the heels of Google and Twitter, Facebook has also revealed a year in status updates. Since people use Facebook differently from Twitter, to share more personal information than use, the results are even more different from the Google Zeitgeist, but no less relevant to people who are trying to get an insight into the subjects that interest their audience.
The most popular term, in fact, was the abbreviation HMU – hit me up – asking people to call the sender. While the term has been in use for a while, it was barely used last year, while this year, particularly since June 2010, the usage started to grow, plateauing around October this year. Games on Facebook and 2011 were also terms which were popular on Facebook, but not on Google or Twitter. However, there was also intersection in terms of words and phrases that made it to the global news media, such as World Cup, Haiti and also Miners, referring to the Chilean miners’ incident.
iPad and iPhone 4 were the most popular gadgets on Facebook around the world, while Justin Beiber continues to dominate with his presence in the virtual world of Facebook, along with Google and Twitter.
This is the second annual study of status messages by Facebook, and so offers the company more useful data with trends to compare against last year. A lot of conversation on Facebook status messages also centered around social games, most notably Zynga’s casual juggernaut, Farmville. Movies like ‘Inception’, ‘Toy Story 3’ and ‘Iron Man 2’ were also heavily discussed, much like on Twitter, while a staggering 25 million unique posts on Facebook were about the iPad and iPhone 4.
