International: PayPal says no to WikiLeaks, future uncertain for controversial site
Controversial website WikiLeaks has been hit by another blow, which apparently again has nothing to do with the immense political pressure being exerted in the US to bring it down. As reported in exchange4media earlier, [International: Amazon defends kicking WikiLeaks, says it was endangering innocents http://www.exchange4media.com/e4m/izone1/izone_fullstory.asp?section_id=4&news_id=40241&tag=6556] Amazon recently kicked WikiLeaks off its web servers almost immediately after the controversial website moved there when its original server was taken down by DDoS attacks.
Today, things got worse for the website as PayPal issued a statement saying that WikiLeaks was in violation of their acceptable use policy, as the payment service was being used, according to PayPal, to “promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity”.
This move closes the primary channel of funding for WikiLeaks, which has functioned mostly through online donations, at a time when it is facing tremendous pressure from governments all around the world for releasing over 250,000 sensitive cables from US diplomatic wires, and could well serve as the nail in the coffin for the controversial website.
PayPal has permanently restricted the account used by WikiLeaks due to a violation of the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, which states that our payment service cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity. We’ve notified the account holder of this action.
