Guest Column: The Mobile Web - Will it replace Desktop?

Mobile has become an important part of our daily lives, the daily internet consumption is moving away from the desktop/ laptop and is more focused towards the smartphone. According to research, around 15% of Global Web traffic comes through mobile. People around the world are accessing the web via their smartphones. The most common uses of mobile web are for checking emails, keeping up-to-date with social media, playing games, checking the weather, maps/searches, music and news.

Smartphones surpassed desktop numbers in 2014 and kept growing with now 70% of all digital media time happening on mobile devices. Leading sources have also reported that 60% of all searches come from mobile devices.

Over the years, web world has experienced tremendous make over. It has improved by leaps and bounds. In the recent past, it has been experiencing a significant transformation due to the success of smart mobile phones. People are finding it more convenient to surf on their touch devices, rather than beating the keyboard for typing keywords.

Mobile will soon become the primary source of internet for the user. In March 2015, the number of mobile-only users overtook desktop users, according to ComScore. This is a trend that will only become more pronounced over the next 10 years Due to increasing content that is available over the internet, mobile users are also increasing their activities on various platforms and channels, few examples are below:

As mobile devices are rapidly taking over, the desktop browser like IE, Firefox, Chrome etc are on a declining trend. Mobile browsers are already capable and will continue to be in the future with the adoption of HTML5 and other next-generation technologies. But mobile devices will not have the luxury of the big screen as in desktops and laptops. This means that in order to be a successful website, it will need websites to function like a mobile app rather than pages with a collection of different links.

Apps may dominate
In the present scenario, mobile app development is gaining popularity, and there will be a time in the future where, website development will be considered secondary. However, experts believe that HTML5 is the future technology. The focus of developers would shift on mobile apps development rather than web development. (Google has already launched “Google Instant Apps”, this will allow users to use a portion of a certain app without even installing it into their device in order to perform an action, and any data that is generated while using instant app will be stored in user’s device temporarily.)

Weight shift
The transformation of mobile represents a shift towards a light asset rather than heavy asset lifestyle. More and more people are relying on cloud computing and mobile devices to do things. With the increasing competition in the industry, mobile manufacturing companies are offering cloud storage services at very low or no cost to their customers (i.e. Google introduced their next generation of Google Pixel with unlimited cloud storage for photos), this eliminates the need of storing large volume of data and records to a great extent.

Whether your day-to-day focus is business management, marketing, sales, SEO, social media, advertising, software development, or customer relationship management, the mobile device has increasingly become the preferred tool for work and communication.

The number of pages visited on mobile devices has now superseded laptops and desktops. Not only are users viewing more pages on smartphones, they are carrying out more searches. According to Search Engine Land, 2016 saw Google users make more mobile searches than desktop ones. This shift has also affected the way people advertise on Google. Whilst desktop advertising has been in decline for the last two years, mobile advertising has increased.
Device ownership and usage

Important to note here is that, multi-device usage is now the norm and mobiles are encouraging people to spend longer online, rather than at the expense of their time on PCs/laptops.

Age group 16-24yrs old identify smartphones as their most important device, this group spends the longest time online each day on their mobiles and even though financial constraints clearly impact this demographic’s spending power, it’s a significant number who are planning to invest in a new smartphone within the next year.

It’s just matter of time when we will see the rise of new technologies (i.e. Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality) that will adapt further to user behavior and will make online experience much more enriching.
