Google taps into AI for an all new Google News

Google is rolling out a new Google News, which will use artificial intelligence to better personalise the app’s suggestions. The re-imagined Google News uses a new set of AI techniques to take a constant flow of information as it hits the web, analyse it in real time and organise it into storylines.

This update to the 15 year old feature was announced on Day 1 of the Google I/O 2018 Developers Conference held in Mountain View on Tuesday.

Google News understands the people, places and things involved in a story as it evolves, and connects how they relate to one another. “This technology lets us synthesize information and put it together in a way that helps you make sense of what’s happening, and what the impact or reaction has been,” Google said.

Google has built a easy-to-use and easy-to-access controls that can help users decide if they want to see more or less of a topic or publisher. Google will experiment with a feature called Newscasts. With this feature all developments in natural language understanding will bring together a collection of articles, videos and quotes on a single topic.

Another feature, “Full Coverage”, will provide a complete picture of how that story is reported from a variety of sources. With just a tap you’ll see top headlines from different sources, videos, local news reports, FAQs, social commentary, and a timeline for stories that have played out over time. Full Coverage will be the same for everyone— “it’s an unpersonalised view of events from a range of trusted news sources,” said Google.

The all new Google News will be available to everyone on Android, iOS, and the web in 127 countries by next week.
