With the e-auction for Indian cricket's bilateral rights just around the corner, the race to acquire the rights has intensified with the entry of social media giants Facebook and global search engine Google fighting Hotstar.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in February opened the bidding for the bilateral rights as the Invitation To Tender (ITT) was floated. The winning bidder will acquire the rights of either of the three media rights package for the BCCI international and domestic matches. The rights will continue for the period of April 2018 to March 2023.

Recently, the BCCI extended the e-auction date from March 27 to April 3 to reach out to make the necessary clarifications to those who had picked up the tender document.

According to media reports, Facebook, Google, Hotstar, Yupp TV, Jio TV and Sony Pictures Network have picked up the tender. The reports also mention that the base price for the digital rights per match has been pegged at INR 8 crore for the first year and for the next four years at INR 7 crore per match. For the television rights, the base price for the first year is INR 35 crore per match and INR 33 crore per match for the next four years.

It must be mentioned that this is not the first time Facebook has shown interest in cricket. The company made a bid of Rs 3,900 crore last year for the digital rights of IPL, but lost to Star India.
