Facebook bags La Liga’s media rights for India; to air matches for free

Social media giant Facebook has won the media rights for Spain's popular football championship, La Liga, for the Indian subcontinent, according to media reports.

With the deal in place, La Liga will be the first European football league to be broadcast exclusively live on Facebook in the Indian subcontinent.

A statement from La Liga reportedly said that all 380 league matches for the new season would be available to viewers in India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The deal is said to be valid for three seasons, starting the 2018-19 season. This year, the tournament is scheduled to begin in August. It will conclude in May 2019.

Some media reports quoted Peter Hutton, Facebook Head of Global Live Sports Programming, as saying that fans could either go to La Liga page on Facebook and can view any of the matches or they can go on to the Facebook page of their favourite clubs to watch the match. No subscriptions are needed, he reportedly said.

Alfredo Bermejo, Head, Digital Strategy, La Liga reportedly said that the Indian sub-continent is an important territory. Partnering with free platforms like Facebook, which has 270 million users in India, was key to them, he reportedly said.

It is being reported that Facebook’s monitoring system will prevent against leakage, ensuring only viewers inside the Indian sub-continent will be able to watch the games on its platform.

Earlier, the La Liga media rights for the Indian subcontinent was with Sony Pictures Networks India.
