Airtel, IMImobile join hands to launch first Tamil voice portal

Airtel has announced the launch of 747, billed as India’s first Tamil voice portal. IMImobile, an enabler of mobile value added services, has teamed up with TV and cine personality, Yuhi Sethu, to develop the portal.

The initiative follows the launch of Tamil SMS a few weeks ago. A statement issued by IMImobile stated that with the telecom market expanding into smaller towns and villages, both the services were expected to do well.

The voice portal was inaugurated by Tamil actor Srikanth. The service includes a number of features like ringtones, greetings, Thirukkural, Kavithai Arangam, tips for women, jokes and dialogues, Business Talk, Youth Zone and recipes.

Elaborating on the portal, its producer, Yuhi Sethu, said, “We conducted a lot of research to understand the pulse of the market and then developed the content. We are extremely happy with the way the product has shaped up and expect it to evoke an excellent response from Airtel’s customers in Tamil Nadu.”

In the ringtones category, which is the highest used service, Airtel customers can download a wide range of popular and latest songs and classics. For movie buffs, there are profiles and songs of leading stars like Rajnikanth, Vikram, Asin and Jyothika. One can download and dedicate ringtones to others as well.

Introducing the services, Mahesh Thampi, COO, Mobility, Chennai and Tamil Nadu, Bharti Airtel Ltd, said, “With our network now expanding quickly into smaller towns and villages, we expect our customers to fully make use of these products and express themselves in Tamil. I am very confident that our customers will find these services extremely entertaining and enjoy themselves to the hilt.”

The greetings section allows customers to greet people and dedicate songs along with personalised messages. Thirukkural provides thought provoking words and quotes by renowned persons as well as a ‘Word for the Day’.

Suresh Jayaraju, General Manager-Marketing and Operations, IMImobile, said, “The mobile phone is now a popular medium with deeper penetration among the masses. We wish to eliminate the existing language barrier for better access and reach of value added services. The 747 Tamil voice portal service is an innovative service and offers the benefit of communicating better in one’s mother tongue. Airtel customers in Tamil Nadu will see great value in this offering. We are proud to be associated with Airtel in this venture.”

Some features of the portal are interactive. For example, for those who love literature and poetry, there is Kavithai Arangam, which enables budding poets to recite poetry and even ask for feedback. Ladies can look for helpful tips on beauty, cooking, and household management in a special section dedicated for them.
