32 fake pages and accounts removed from Facebook and Instagram

Facebook has announced that it has shut down 32 individual pages and accounts that were believed to be spreading misinformation on its social media platform, and also on Instagram, according to media reports.

The purge of fake accounts follows Facebook's announcement that it aims to be more transparent with users about the use of its platform for untoward political benefit. This move also includes setting up a research arm to stop the proliferation of fake news on Whatsapp during elections in India and other countries, and has brought to light who spends money for political ads for the upcoming US mid term elections.

According to a post on Facebook's blog, Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cyber-security Policy, Facebook, said that the social media giant has removed eight pages and seventeen profiles from the social media platform and nine Instagram accounts.

The post also states that “It’s clear that whoever set up these accounts went to much greater lengths to obscure their true identities than the Russian-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) has in the past. We believe this could be partly due to changes we’ve made over the last year to make this kind of abuse much harder.”

Facebook has emphasised that it is still investigating the matter, but it has acknowledged that it is working with external agencies and experts, including the Department of Justice and international affairs think-tank The Atlantic Council.
