e4mChillout: FabIndia CMO on being a leisurely traveller and his love for single-malts
Karan Kumar, CMO, FabIndia, has a rather unusual approach to his weekends. He spends a good chunk of his weekends prepping for the work week ahead of him. He also unwinds with his seven-year-old daughter, playing with her and guiding her with homework and weekend projects.
exchange4media caught up with Kumar to learn about how he spends his down time.
On a typical weekend you will find me...
I spend my weekend on two things: my daughter and reading up about everything that I have been working on during the week. If I am doing something on digital, social, category development, I try to read on those topics so that when I return to office on a Monday, I am better informed. During the week when you are working on projects, there is only so much information that you have from what you have learnt, from what your colleagues have told you. If I want to dig a little deeper into these subjects, I cannot do that during office hours.
My idea of relaxing is...
Cooking, travelling and playing in the park with my daughter are three times when I do not carry my mobile phone with me. Every other time I have it on me, so I am really never switched off. These are three actives when I am truly offline, so that’s when I am most relaxed.
I developed an interest in cooking...
Since I was a child I have been very interested in cooking. As I mentioned, cooking is one of those times when I am most relaxed. I love preparing Mughlai and Hyderabadi food. I make a mean Mutton Korma in the Hyderabadi style with the ulte-tawe ka parantha. I have been experimenting and cross-matching my recipes a lot. Nine out of 10 times the results are brilliant. Thankfully! I think I have a knack for understanding what flavour combinations work well with each other. Having grown up in Kolkata and being a Punjabi myself, I sometimes try and combine Paanch Phoron and Garam Masala.
My idea of travel...
I am the sort of person who will spend a lot of time at one place so I cannot do ‘five countries in seven days’ kind of stuff. I may do three-four locations over 15 days when I take in the local flavour, people, and culture. I have been staying in B&Bs for a long time, that helps mingle with the locals. The experience is that much more authentic and flavoursome whether it is food, people, drinks, music, or even conversations.
I confess, I binge-watched...
I binge watched all of House of Cards, Narcos, Fauda, Fargo.
A hobby I take very seriously...
I love my single-malts, very much. So I spend a lot of time researching single-malts, where they come from, how they are made, the legend behind each of them. I also love listening to Jazz and Blues. In my younger years I used to be a soccer player, so I continue to dabble in that - watching and playing as much as I can.
My next vacation/adventure will be …
I would love to plan a trip to the former CIS (former Soviet) countries. Maybe visit Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. And there is also Iceland, which is on my bucket-list.
