Catalyst to career growth is real individual growth: Chandramouli Venkatesan on his new book

The Ad Club in association with Hindustan Times presented a Knowledge Series session with Chandramouli Venkatesan, CEO (special projects) - ‎Pidilite Industries Limited. Chandramouli interacted with the audience about his book The Catalyst. The book was unveiled among the likes of Vikram Sakhuja, ‎Group CEO Madison Media & OOH - ‎Madison World, Sam Balsara, Chairman - ‎Madison World, Rajeev Beotra, CEO HT English, Dr Bhaskar Das, Executive President, DB Corp ltd and Pradeep Dwivedi, CEO, ‎Sakal Media Group among others.
Sakhuja recalled how Chandramouli’s insights on success have been transformational for his team. It was followed by  Das ‘reintroducing’ the CEO. Dr Das went about praising him and the book, "He is a corporate student, coach, mentor with about 26 years of experience. A sports enthusiast who believes in holding his life in balance, he conducted numerous sessions which benefited thousands. The book is accessible, engaging and easy to follow and written by someone who has experienced all these personally. The Catalyst will empower you with right tools to succeed at your workplace and get most out of every moment."
Chandramouli began dwelling on how he started on the book “I set myself a routine four years back. Each trip (on my return) I would pen down on what makes people successful. That developed into a great collection of insights.” He talked about taking a sabbatical in 2016 during which he conducted 30 sessions at companies. It was a huge success following which people suggested him to write a book on it. “All those 30 sessions have gone into distilling the message in the book ‘The Catalyst.’ I hope reading this book will help you soar.”
He spoke about bringing up the problems that one needs to solve to be successful, which the book has. Chandramouli touched upon career growth which is equal to real individual growth with or without environmental factors. “All these aspects of capabilities, skills, leadership has to keep growing if your career has to grow. Also career is 40 years long. It’s a marathon. The environmental factors tend to balance out over 40 years. In this time duration, you will have headwinds and tailwinds in your career which will balance each other. That’s the beauty of 40 years. So the catalyst to career growth is real individual growth.”
During his talk he had an interesting approach to The Gita’s famous statement, ‘Karm karo phal ki chinta mat karo’ (do your job without expecting/bothering about the outcome). “We mistakenly interpreted that results are not important. For Krishna results are very important. He is saying that the probability of getting the result you want increases if you stop worrying about the result and start focusing on the deeds towards the result. Our careers are exactly like that.”
In the topic he briefly mentioned three areas of individual growth to focus on: your learning and productivity model, career management and how do you bring life and values into the equation of success.”If you can manage these three you will get the kind of success that vast majority get,” he said.
