WPP Probed if Sir Martin Sorrell Used Company Money for a Prostitute: WSJ Report

Over the weekend, Sir Martin Sorrell faced an allegation that he used money from WPP to pay for a prostitute. Sorrell continues to strongly deny the allegations ever since news of the probe broke in early April.

After weeks of speculation, following his exit from WPP, The Wall Street Journal reported that a probe into his conduct had investigated the claim. It is unclear what the inquiry had found, the paper said.

Reports say that the allegation concerns Sorrell spending of several hundred pounds on a prostitute in Mayfair one evening last June.

The whistleblower is thought to be a disgruntled chauffeur who lost his job, say reports. Sorrell is bound by terms of a confidentiality agreement he signed when he left WPP in April. WPP had said it was investigating its former CEO over an allegation of 'personal misconduct'.

His spokesman said in media reports: "As regards the allegations which have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Sir Martin strenuously denies them. He will be making no further comment."

"He has no complaint about there being an investigation if there needed to be one, but he felt it was badly conducted," said a friend of Sorrell in certain sections of media.
Sorrell has been told there is no written dossier about his behaviour but only a verbal report delivered to the board by US law firm, Wilmer Hale. The company declined to say what its investigation had involved when Sorrell stepped down in mid-April.

He is understood to have decided to quit WPP despite denying the accusation against him because of a breakdown in relations with the board.
