SMG’s MediaVest brand to launch in India on April 15; Dinesh Singh Rathore likely to head the business

Starcom MediaVest Group’s (SMG) plans to launch the MediaVest brand in India are near fructification. It is learnt that SMG will launch MediaVest Worldwide in India by April 15, 2009. It is understood that Starcom has found an internal candidate to head the business, and in all likelihood it would be Dinesh Singh Rathore, who has so far been heading FutureWorks for the agency.

When asked on the subject, Starcom MediaVest Group’s South Asia, CEO, Ravi Kiran, neither confirmed nor denied the development. In an earlier conversation with exchange4media, Andrew Swinand, President, Global Operations had said that MediaVest would be launched in India “soon”.

Sources informed that one reason why SMG had been emboldened to launch MediaVest Worldwide in India was the success that it had seen with the IMX model in India. MediaVest Worldwide would begin offices in more than one city, and sources close to the situation also said that SMG had worked on a fixed criteria to move some clients from Starcom Worldwide to MediaVest Worldwide, so that the agency began its India run with a sizeable business.

The two brands – Starcom Worldwide and MediaVest Worldwide – co-exist in various international markets at present. These include the likes of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand in the Asia region, around 10 markets in Latin America, and markets such as the UK, the US and Russia. The combined presence of Starcom and MediaVest has allowed SMG to be a leading player in markets like the US and Russia. Swinand had informed during his India visit in December 2008 that in a market like Russia, Starcom Worldwide and MediaVest Worldwide were the number one and number two brands.
