Peerless roped in as sponsor of Federation Cup; Zee Sports to telecast 16 matches

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Zee Sports on Friday announced that the Peerless Group would be the title sponsor for the 28th Federation Cup. The tournament, to be called the ‘Peerless Federation Cup’, would be held at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata from December 19-30, 2006. Zee Sports, as part of its 10-year contract with AIFF, will telecast all the 16 matches of the Federation Cup.

S K Roy, Managing Director, Peerless Group, said, “Football is one of the most popular sports in the country and with Federation Cup being organised in a grand way, there is no better event for which the Peerless Group could be the title sponsor. I am confident the Peerless Federation Cup 2006 will go a long way in reviving our yesteryears’ glory in football and the Tournament will turn out to be a mega sporting event fuelling our national pride.”

This edition of the Peerless Federation Cup will offer a total prize money of Rs 26 lakh. The winner of the tournament will take home Rs 12 lakh, while the runners up will win Rs 7 lakh. The third place winner receives Rs 2 lakh. Also, quarterfinal winners get a cheque of Rs 60,000 while the winner of the pre-quarter finals will receive a prize money of Rs 30,000. The Fair Play Team Award instituted last year will continue with a prize money of Rs 50,000.

This year, the Peerless Federation Cup is expected to be a big draw with some of the big names of the game participating in the Tournament. The clubs participating in this edition of the Peerless Federation Cup include Mahindra United, Sporting Club de Goa, Kingfisher East Bengal, Mohan Bagan, Dempo Sports Club, JCT, Mohammendan Sporting, Air India, Churchill Brothers, Salgaocar Sports Club, HAL, Vasco Sports Club, Chirag United, Army XI, State Bank of Travancore, and Viva Kerala.

Speaking on the occasion, Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, President, All India Football Federation, said, “I am delighted that Peerless has come on board as the title sponsor, which will give a much-needed fillip to the Federation Cup. Indian football has a lot to achieve and we require committed sponsor like Peerless to attain our goals.”
