Lion of St Mark is not just a recognition for Prasoon and me but for us all: Piyush Pandey

We at exchange4media on Thursday felt honoured in felicitating the legendary Pandey Brothers - Priyush and Prasoon - for being chosen to be honoured with the Lion of St Mark at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

As the brothers made their way to the stage to accept the honour, the entire room filled with those who have grown up watching and loving the ads crafted by Piyush and Prasoon arose to give the brothers a well-deserved standing ovation. Families of the two brothers, and other industry stalwarts, including Sonal Dabral, Puneet Mishra, Kunal Jeswani, Kartik Sharma, Gaurav Jeet Singh, Rubeena Singh cheered the duo for receiving this honour.
Piyush, who is known to wear his emotions on his sleeve, was moved to tears, said, “I just had a couple of whiskeys and one came out of my right eye and the other through my left.”

“This award is not just a recognition for Prasoon and me, it is a recognition for us all,” Piyush humbly said. “When you happen to be older and the first ones, you get the chance to be recognised. There are a lot of people who have done a lot of work. And today I feel India is on the stage where a lot of people in our industry can say : If these guys can do it, I can do it better.”
Prasoon, who was also feeling emotional about the moment, said that recognition they are receiving is for appreciating the land the brothers hail from. "All our body of work is deeply rooted in the Indian ethos, which means in a way we are getting this award for just appreciating, admiring and loving the land that we come from,” he said. He further added that the occasion was very special to the brothers as it was their father's birthday on Thursday. "Our parents must be looking down with great satisfaction and smiling ear to ear,” he said.

Shelly Lazarus, Chairman Emeritus of Ogilvy & Mather, in her congratulatory video note to Prasoon and Piyush mentioned that she had never come across someone from the industry being requested for autographs on the street while recalling an experience with Piyush Pandey.

As it turns out, the request for autographs has graduated into requests for selfies in the new millennium. The brothers who have given India its most memorable ads are among the most well-known admen in India. The brothers were seen posing for photos with fans, budding leaders of the industry all through the evening. Prasoon, armed with his long hands (all puns intended) even offered to take some selfies while Piyush questioned the selfie-craze of this generation. It was heartening to see the two men gracefully agree to every request always with a huge smile and no hint of weariness.
Indeed, these are our Lions and we are proud of them.
