In remembrance of ad legend Ranjan Kapur: Industry pays tribute

The advertising and marketing world is reeling under the shocking news of the death of Ranjan Kapur, Chairman, WPP India and ex-managing director, Ogilvy India. Kapur passed away due to a heart attack on Saturday afternoon.

With over four decades of service in advertising, Kapur started his career with Citibank and served long stints in senior positions at Ogilvy & Mather India Private Limited (O&M) before retiring in 2003. Kapur was honoured with the Industry's Lifetime Achievement Award from AAAI in 2008 for his contribution to the advertising industry.

Twitter was agog with industry colleagues and well-wishers expressing their deepest condolences and remembering Kapur as a great adman and an even more beautiful human being. They reminisced the moments spent with him and how he was always ready to help his friends and colleagues. “Saddened to hear about Ranjan Kapur. An architect of the Advertising industry in India. Cherish the moments spent with him and Jimi,” tweeted Prasoon Joshi, CEO and CCO McCann Worldgroup India and Chairman McCann Worldgroup Asia Pacific.

Tarun Rai, CEO of JWT South Asia also expressed his shock over the ad guru’s sudden demise, remembering how they recently celebrated his 75th birthday together. “A legend in advertising. A thorough gentleman. A wonderful human being. My guide for the last three years. Just too shocked; we just celebrated your 75th in December! #RIP Ranjan Kapoor. Will miss our conversations,” wrote Rai.

Partha Sinha, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, McCann Worldgroup in a heartfelt tweet wrote about how Kapur has impacted lives and how with his demise, the biggest chapter of Indian advertising just got concluded. “A very very sad day for Indian advertising. RIP Ranjan Kapur. I am lucky to have worked with him - he was one of the biggest influences on many of us at that time. They don’t make them like him anymore. The biggest chapter of Indian advertising just got concluded,” tweeted Sinha.

Applauding his work ethics and brilliance were Raj Nayak, COO, Viacom 18, Vikas Mehta, CEO, PointNine Lintas, Manish Bhatt, Founder Director, Scarecrow Communications, among others. Bhatt in his tweet shared a screenshot of his Whatsapp chat with Kapur wherein he asked him for feedback on the packaging and he replied promptly. “RIP Ranjan Kapur (Chairman, WPP INDIA ). How many of us have humility to give prompt feedback on a packaging created by our juniors?,” he wrote.
