Delhi HC bench sets aside order directing Airtel to tweak IPL ads

A division bench of the Delhi High Court has put aside an earlier order of the court directing Bharti Airtel to amend its advertisements for the Indian Premier League, according to media reports. The order was pronounced on Thursday.

The division bench, however, retained the directive to use disclaimer in the newspaper advertisement in font size 12 instead of 10, the media reports stated.

On a petition filed by Reliance Jio, a single bench of the high court on April 13 ordered Airtel to tweak its ad campaign that claims to offer the T20 matches ‘free’ and ‘live’ to its subscribers.  In the petition, Reliance Jio had claimed that Airtel is misleading consumers by suggesting that subscribers could live-stream the IPL matches free of cost. Jio argued that the ad does not mention that subscribers will incur data charges.

Days after the first order of the court, Reliance Jio had filed a contempt court lea in the Delhi High Court against Bharti Airtel, alleging that the disclaimer added by Airtel in its IPL advertisement on the instruction of the court was insufficient.

The Sunil Mittal-owned Bharti Airtel had appealed against the order of the single bench.
