Create content that empowers women: Maneka Gandhi at Goafest

Emphasizing the need for more advertising content that empowers women and highlightstheir issues, Women &Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi at Goafest 2017 honored the young talent from Havas Media for their campaign on mitigating violence against women.

The Gender Sensitivity award was bestowed upon Shilpa Chaudhary and Aayushi Rastogi of Havas Delhi. “So far, we create ads that emphasize the need for women to get fairer or thinner. Let’s use this medium to talk about their rights,” said the minister. 

Gandhi’s speech revolved around the need for strong portrayal of women in advertisements. Applauding the industry’s initiative to create a campaign that mitigates violence against women, Gandhi said, “The purpose of advertising is to create demand and make things aspirational. This is the first time that the industry has got together to make an attitude aspirational.”

The minister spoke about the need for creating content that talked about the rights of girls to go to school, participate in sports, as well as the need for availability of sanitary napkins in schools to maintain menstrual hygiene. 

“Films like Dangal and Pink go to one extent but your ads can go forward. We need to create ads that demand more respect for woman,” she added.
