Chalomumbai.com stops e-mail service

Chalomumbai.com, the Internet initiative of Mid-Day Multimedia and the comprehensive city-centric portal, has discontinued its e-mail service on the site from October 8. The decision was taken as it was not a viable proposition.

In an official e-mail to all its subscribers, the chalomumbai.com team said, "With the deepest regret, we have decided to discontinue the e-mail service on the site. This decision was reached because we found that the e-mail service was not a viable option."

In recent months, several dotcoms have started charging for their services. USA.net and 123india.com have converted their free mail services to paid ones.

VSNL, the largest Internet service provider, has also adopted wait and watch approach even though it thinks that it may be necessary to charge for e-mail service, at a later stage. Other sites such as Archies.com has also started charging for its services.

The portal, which had started the Mi-News service in association with BPL Mobile, has now gone pay. The Mi-News service, which currently has over 11,000 plus subscribers, is now being charged at Rs 60 per month, wherein the subscribers will be constantly updated on the latest and breaking news.

Chalomumbai.com had close to 100,000 e-mail subscribers. Despite discontinuing the e-mail service, the team will continue to deliver and publish breaking news, timely information and features to keep the subscribers posted on the latest happenings in Mumbai, India and the world.

The company recently has also taken the decision to call the Mid-Day Multimedia interactive division as the "Access Division". According to the company it was part of the business strategy to be accessible to their esteemed customer wherever they are.

As regards its further plans, the access division is further looking at all alternative means of delivering digital content.
