Sumner Redstone was named the Media Person of the Year, at the Cannes Lions 2002. The award, which honors a leading personality from the worldwide media industry, would be given in recognition of Redstone''s success in establishing Viacom as one of the world''s premier entertainment and media companies. The trophy will be presented to Redstone during the Press, Outdoor and Media Lions Awards Ceremony, on Tuesday 18 June 2002.
Redstone''s career in media began in 1954 when he joined National Amusements, a chain of local drive-in film theatres in the U.S. He was appointed CEO in 1967 and Chairman in 1986. After National Amusements acquired a controlling interest in Viacom in June 1987, Redstone went on to become the CEO of Viacom and since then Viacom has become a leading global and diversified media company.
Viacom owns two U.S. broadcast networks, CBS and UPN and manages a total of nine cable programming services, including the global youth brand MTV and children''s network Nickelodeon, which have a presence in India also. Viacom''s properties also include Viacom Outdoor, Paramount Pictures, Paramount Television, Paramount Parks, TNN: The National Network, Simon & Schuster amongst others.
