Chennai is gearing up to host the fourth edition of the calendar event of Advertising Club Madras, Tamizh Awards, on March 17 this year. The awards were first instituted in 2008 to recognise and celebrate communication targeted at Tamizh audiences, bearing in mind their sensibilities, language, and culture.
P Subramaniam, President, Ad Club Madras and VP, OTS Advertising, spoke to exchange4media about the four-year journey and the highlights of this year. “It’s been a great journey and I am happy that the level and scale of the event is improving by the year. There has been a tremendous upgrade in the quality of entries. More participation will definitely stop the talent drain that the South is facing,” he said.
“Sponsorships have started increasing. Daily Thanthi has continued its support as title sponsor for the past four years. This year, we have got Indian Terrain, Ananda Vikatan, Style Spa, Sulekha.com, Union Bank, and Hello FM on board as sponsors,” he added.
The last edition saw the introduction of awards for advertising in English as well. The main highlight this year is that the team winning the coveted title of ‘Sakalakalavallavan (agency of the year)’ will receive a special award of Rs 1 lakh from Hello FM.
More than 250 entries have been received across 19 categories this year. The categories have remained the same except the splitting of the ‘Jingle’ category into ‘Jingle for Film’ and ‘Jingle for Radio’.
“We have got in excess of 250 entries, slightly lower than last year. The challenge for us is to improve the number of entries. This is branded as ‘Daily Thanthi Tamizh Awards’ and we are celebrating a local language predominantly, hence, we face a lot of pressure and challenge in garnering more entries. We will also continue to improve the scale of the event and try to bring in more reforms next year,” said Subramaniam.
Entries will be judged by Ramanujam Sridhar, CEO of Integrated Brand-Comm; Thomas Xavier, Chairman and NCD, Orchard Advertising; and K S Chakravarthy (Chax), NCD, DraftFCB Ulka Advertising.
