VSNL to add 900 mbps of bandwidth to its network

VSNL would, henceforth, procure bandwidth before a demand has been raised by industry. With a shift in policy VSNL has decided to immediately add 900 mbps of bandwidth to its network, which would raise the total international bandwidth available in the country to 1.2 gbps by end-2000. Currently, VSNL has a bandwidth of 355 mbps available. It is in the process of adding 465 mbps more in its network. Another 465 mbps will be added by the end of this year. The demand of bandwidth is growing exponentially. In its latest survey, Nasscom has predicted a demand of 300 gbps bandwidth by 2005. The main applications which will drive the demand in growth during the 2000-2005 period are in the fields of communications, internet access, corporate networking, business-to-business and business-to-consumer communications, software exports, IT enabled services, e-commerce, and residential video services.
