Ode to grand old ads: AIB creates an advertising time machine
Comedy collective AIB has collaborated with beat-boxing band Voctronica to produce a video that that pays homage to the greatest, most memorable ads India has ever seen
For the 90s’ kid, TV commercials are etched as irreplaceable memories of childhood. All India Bakchod (AIB), in collaboration with Voctronica, has paid an apt tribute to all of our favourite ads from the 90s. This unique tribute takes you on a trip down the memory lane.
This 3.42 minute-video features a perfectly put-together jingle mix of the most popular Indian ads, and uses an all-vocal orchestra and no instruments.
The video revisits iconic jingles of the most memorable Indian ads—Wonderful Doodh mark ad, Nirma, Vicks, Kingfisher, Ujala, Vicco, Bajaj, Taj-Mahal Tea, Marie, Sundrop, Uncle Chips, Titan, Colgate Active Salt, Close-Up, Pepsodent, Pan Parag, Pepsi, B-Tex, Fair and Lovely, Tide, Complan, Dermicool, Jaago Grahak Jaago, MDH Masala, Badhshah Masala, Fevicol, Lijjat Papad, Coca-Cola, Essel World, Boomer, LifeBuoy, Action Shoes, Classic ToothBrush, Hero, Mutual Fund Investments (LIC, ICICI), Britannia, and Ghadi Detergent.
There was a time when advertising was all about catchy jingles, whereas today we just switch to another channel or mute our television sets as soon as an ad begins. Jingles like ‘Aya Naya Ujala, Chaar Boondo Wala’, ‘Bole Mere Lips, I Love Uncle Chips’, 'Washing Powder Nirma', ‘Vicks Ki Goli Lo, Kich Kich Door Karo’, have always remained etched in our memories, synonymous for the brands they represent.

Uploaded on YouTube on July 11, the video has already crossed 77,060 views and is expected to fetch big numbers over the coming weeks. AIB has also launched a guessing game with the video. Whoever names all the ads will have to leave a comment, and stand a chance to win some AIB merchandise.
AIB’s team includes names like Tanmay Bhat, Rohan Joshi, Gursimran Khamba and Ashish Sakya, who are popular in the digital world. The podcasters had over 40,000 Twitter followers, 509,529 likes on Facebook and over 510,218 subscribers on YouTube.
AIB has earlier done a number of videos which have been satirical takes on issues like Shit Indians Do In Theatres, Section 377, ban on pornography in India, Rape: It’s your fault and many more.
The musical talent behind the video—Voctronica—is India's first all-vocal ensemble. The band was set up by world-renowned beat boxer, Shlomo (UK), along with MC Testament (UK), Sony Music India and British Council India.
