ASCI has received consumer complaint in connection with misleading claim that Marico’s Saffola Active and Saffola Gold respectively absorb 28% and 20% less oil as compared to other single seed oils like sunflower, Soyabean, Palmolien and groundnut. Marico Limited in its reply also submitted that product is made using patented “Losorb” technology which means that lesser quantity of oil are absorbed under frying condition. Reports say the claim was reviewed by technical expert of ASCI and Consumer Complaint Council (CCC). In response of said complaint Marico Ltd. Submitted lab report showing that they have used Puri Dough as a food for frying test and compare test with other available cooking oils.

CCC concluded that the test report and data presented by Marico is only limited to one food item- Puri and not covered other variety of fried foods that are commonly cooked in home like Samosa and Pakoda and oil absorption depends on various other factors such as moisture content, ingredients etc. CCC opined that Marico’s claim of 28-20% respectively for their popular products as compared to other single seed oil was inadequately substantiated and misleading by omission. CCC held that said claims in Marico’s corporate website, Amazon website and YouTube Advertisement contravened Chapter 1.1 and 1.4 of ASCI code and hence ask to assured compliance with CCC recommendation.
