Indian Newspaper Congress 2008 to find ways to thrive and survive in a convergence era

In keeping with the long-pending demand of the Indian newspaper industry the Indian Newspaper Society in collaboration with exchange4media is presenting the first ever Indian Newspaper Congress (INC), which will be held in Delhi on May 16, 2008. One of the key goals of the inaugural INC would be to chart out the future course of the Indian newspaper industry, look at international newspaper trends and crystal-gaze into the future.

One of the highlights of the Congress is the list of speakers, who represent the who’s who of Indian media, advertising and corporate honchos. Names such as CNN-IBN’s Rajdeep Sardesai, Zee Network’s Pradeep Guha, GroupM’s Vikram Sakhuja, Madison Communications’ Sam Balsara, BCCL’s Ravi Dhariwal, Max New York Life’s Anisha Motwani, and India Today Group’s Ashish Bagga, among many others.

The Indian Newspaper Congress 2008 will put the spotlight on newspapers at a time when the International newspaper audiences are diminishing, however Indian newspapers are growing from strength to strength with regional newspaper titles taking the lead.

Bahubali Shah, President, INS, and MD of Gujarat Samachar, said, “The Indian newspaper industry is poised for another round of growth and evolution in this fast growing yet competitive media industry. This joint initiative of INS and exchange4media is a way to crystal-gaze and introspect at the same time.”

According to Anurag Batra, Editor-in-Chief, exchange4media, “The 24x7 news cycle and the digital consumer are getting marketers to relook at newspaper organisations to deliver solutions in a unique manner as newspaper organisations have the knowledge of regions and markets and hence, are emerging as key partners to growth in all markets for entrepreneurs and marketers. The Indian Newspaper Congress 2008 is a unique way of evangelising the strengths of newspapers and newspaper organisations and look at the emerging trends.”

In one of the most vibrant media markets, how do newspapers re-invent themselves in the convergence era? This would set the tone for the first panel discussion followed by discussions on regional newspapers and their phenomenal growth in India. Other topics for discussion would be on free newspapers followed by a session on research surveys – ‘Are they catalyst in growth of newspapers or a hindrance?’

The Congress will bring together the entire Indian media fraternity, including representatives from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, newspaper barons, newspaper publishers, broadcasters, media owners, marketers and advertisers, media planners and buyers, magazine editors, brand managers, circulation and distribution specialists, researchers, media and financial consultants and industry analysts and other stakeholders in the newspaper industry, all under one roof.
