Hindustan to further spread footprint in UP with Gorakhpur edition in September

To further strengthen its presence in the Hindi belt, Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd (HMVL) is all set to launch its Hindi daily Hindustan’s Gorakhpur edition in the first week of September this year. The newspaper will have 18 pages, however, the cover price is yet to be finalised. Nagendra will be the Resident Editor for the Gorakhpur edition. Prior to this, he was Resident Editor of Hindustan and has been associated with Hindustan since 1986.

Speaking on the latest launch plan, Shashi Shekhar, Editor-in-Chief, Hindustan, said, “We want to strengthen our presence in Uttar Pradesh, and this is a step towards that. Subscription bookings are already on and we are getting good responses. We will start with around 1.4 lakh copies initially.” Cover price, as mentioned, though has not been finalised, could be at par with competition - Dainik Jagran and Amar Ujala, i.e. Rs 3.50. "We could have a lower cover price if competition lowers its cover price before our launch," says Shekhar. The edition is expected to have anything between 16 to 24 pages and a colour printing machine is being set up and there will be colour pages in the edition as well.

At present, Gorakhpur is being serviced by Hindustan’s Lucknow edition. The new edition will target the SEC A and B readers in the region.

It may be recalled that almost a year back Hindustan had launched its Bareilly edition in Uttar Pradesh. “We have got a tremendous response in the Bareilly market,” Shekhar said. Further, speaking on future expansion plans of Hindustan newspaper, he added, “We would like to enter the Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana markets as soon as possible.”

The Gorakhpur launch is being supported by a 360-degree marketing campaign and an aggressive circulation drive. The paper will face some stiff competition in this market from Hindi dailies like Dainik Jagran and Amar Ujala.

Hindustan has four editions and 113 sub-editions across the Hindi belt. They are spread across Delhi, Bihar (Patna, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur), Jharkhand (Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad), Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Varanasi, Meerut, Agra, Bareilly and Kanpur), and Chandigarh. Apart from these, the paper is also available in key towns like Aligarh, Mathura and Allahabad.

Above and beyond the launch of the Bareilly edition, Hindustan also went ahead to make its Patna edition all colour and also launched a four page supplement- Yuva in Patna.
