iZone International: Nokia, MS in pact for Windows Phone 7 based smartphones
While Nokia has been struggling with its Symbian platform and losing market share to newcomers Apple and Google, who are the most talked about platforms today, the company has also been losing smartphone market share to RIM, and while the platform is still the largest in the developing world, the company is definitely beleaguered.
Microsoft, on the other hand, came out with Windows Phone 7 just last year, and faced a lukewarm response. While they are doing pretty solidly in terms of manufacturer adoption and marketplace growth, it is not nearly as fast growing as Android or iOS, and so, perhaps inevitably, the two giants are partnering up to create new Nokia smartphones, which will run on Windows Phone 7. Furthermore, the two are also planning to “integrate key assets to create completely new service offerings”, or in other words, merge the Ovi store with the Windows Phone Market.
At the same time, Nokia is continuing development on Symbian and MeeGo, and a MeeGo based product, rumoured amongst other things to be a Nokia tablet, is expected later this year.
The partnership makes a lot of sense for both companies, and under the agreement, Bing will power search on the new Nokia phones, while Microsoft’s adCenter will bring search-based advertising to the devices.
Whether this move will further fragment the mobile OS base, or lead to a round of consolidation remains to be seen, but it’s fairly safe to say that the rumours of Nokia adopting Android can finally be laid to rest.
