How often do we pause and ponder about industry issues that have a bearing beyond just our rigmaroles? Share insights that can further the common understanding? Or, at the very least, point at things that need to be set right. View Point - an exchange4media platform, will fill this void and become a source of understanding, action and perhaps some inspiration.

Role of Leadership in Media Agencies Leadership has always been difficult to quantify. To some it's a mythical quality that's pretty close to voodoo or black magic. But most people grudgingly or otherwise accept that it does have a role to play in most things in life, and not least of all at work…

By the early eighties, Ian Botham was widely regarded as one of the top 2 or 3 all-rounders that the cricket world had ever seen. He was certainly considered THE best in business at that time, mainly because of his ability to win matches with either the bat or the ball, and more often with both. He was rewarded for his brilliant individual capabilities with the highest price in the game, the captaincy of his national team to play against the Aussies in Cricket's most valued and hard-fought battle - The Ashes. The first two matches under Botham's captaincy were a disaster for England. They lost both the matches in less than four days. And worse still Botham's own form was rather indifferent. Botham got the boot from captaincy, and in came a captain who couldn't actually find a place on the team on his own cricketing ability, but was a brilliant leader - Mike Brearly. What happened next, is one of cricket's greatest and most inspiring stories. England went on to win the next three matches and Botham turned humiliation to triumph in a dramatic fashion, and was the man of the match in all those three triumphs.

But to most pundits of the game, the series was remarkable apart from Botham's heroics, for the amazing leadership provided by Brearly to the side. Brearly merely was the change agent reminding Botham of the stupendous talent he possessed. He just emptied his mind of self-doubt and filled it back with confidence and the knowledge that he could do anything, after all he was Botham!

Let's move on two decades and to football. If David Beckham weren't the captain of the English football team, would they play any differently? I doubt it! Football is a sport played by eleven professionals who know their own job better than any one else on the team and the captain is just someone for the referee to talk to. One may argue that the real leader of a football team is the coach, but then even coach can't really improve the on ground performance of a team beyond a point…

Today role of leadership is different because the followers are different, the game has changed…

Leadership has a role to play in cricket even today - though that role is a lot less dramatic today, and the cricketers too are a far more professional lot. You just need to watch the smooth Waugh to Ponting transition to see what I mean…

What we must ask ourselves then, is leadership an outdated concept? Afterall a team of professionals like the Aussie cricket team doesn't depend on the leader too much, do they? Each player knows what is expected of him, goes out and delivers that…

So which sport does the media world resemble? Are we essentially like the footballers of today or are we still waiting-for-someone-to-show-the-way cricketers of the 80's? My hunch is we are moving with the times - certainly in the media world. The names that so dominated the past, were always larger than life, some sort of demi-Gods (mostly demi-Goddesses), everyone was in awe of the leaders of the past. Their craft was surrounded in some sort of mystique that was hard to decipher. Today's leaders are far more approachable and real. And my submission is that it's more to do with the followers than the leaders… The way we play the game has changed - that's all!

What do great leaders have in common? The leaders of the past century, Gandhi, Churchill, Roosevelt, Ataturk and so on had some common traits. They made things happen, even when all seemed lost…, they converted hopeless situations into opportunities…, they created leaders out of their followers…, they ensured that their vision was shared clearly and with great simplicity with their teams… They could see beyond what their followers could…, And yes one more common trait - they are all redundant today…

The great leaders of the past have many common traits and one of them is - they are all redundant today…

And that may just have the key to leadership in media. In a fast changing environment of media (Incidentally have you ever wondered why no one really retires from media, they leave well before that J - something to think about for all of us…), the key role of leadership is vision sharing (cliché no. 1). This I guess comes out of experience and knowledge - something a fellow ex-engineer friend calls carbon dating… The term vision sharing is abused so much that it's almost a wall paper today… I can visualise you all go- Yeah! Yeah! Tell me another one, yawn! But how many media agency leaders can claim to have achieved this or at least attempted to… I know a couple but they shall remain unnamed in this article.

Next, the leader has the responsibility of creating tomorrow's leaders (Cliché no. 2). No leader is a leader unless he/ she creates leaders from their teams… Did I hear another yawn? But then friends did you expect to hear something new about leadership here? Well stay on with me and it may just come, serious!

Third, the leader needs to see beyond the followers. The followers may be experts at handling the trees, but the leader needs to be able to see beyond the trees, the leader needs to see the woods (Bad cliché no. 3). The leader also needs to have a better understanding of the future than the team. By now you are irritated, aren't you? But when I look around within our small (and often incestuous) industry, I do not see too many claimants to the Let-me-show-you-the future Gurus… Admittedly future is the most difficult thing to predict, but how many of us even attempt to do that? Surprisingly, I think a lot of our clients are far more inquisitive about the future of media than us media professionals…

Cometh the moment, cometh the man! Leadership is about grabbing the moment the history presents and making the most of it…

And that too we need to predict the future as much to protect ourselves from being caught in the quagmire of change that today's media world is, apart from ensuring that the team is one step ahead of the morrow…

I find this to be the biggest chink in today's media leader's armor. Not being on top of that may merely lead to the count of media professionals not retiring from media increasing by one more…

Finally, I firmly believe that leadership is not about size, position or rank. Leadership is about grabbing the moment that history presents and making the most of it. Gandhi found his moment on a train in South Africa, Churchill in a bombed out capital of a country, Roosevelt in a shell shocked nation mired in self-doubt, Brearly in the shaken and disbelieving mind of a very talented man. When yours and mine moment arrives, are we going to be ready to grab it and play tango with it? You decide!
