Zee News surges ahead as most favoured news channel

Riding on the popularity of Venus’ transit across the skies, courtesy its programme ‘Shukra hai Suraj hai’, Zee News has surged ahead as the most favoured news channel among of daytime viewers. Recent TAM data (week ended 12 June, All India, TG AB Male 25+, C&S - 6 am to 5:59 p.m.) show that on 8th June daytime viewers spent more time on Zee News compared to other channels. Viewers spent 27 minutes on Zee News, the highest among all news channels. In comparison, Star News clocked 18 minutes, Aaj Tak 16 minutes, NDTV 13 minutes and DD News 11 minutes.

In terms of channel shares, too, Zee News is ahead of NDTV, Star News and DD News. Zee News’ transit of Venus programming made it the No. 1 choice of viewers with a leading channel share of 3.84, ahead of Aaj Tak 3.64, Star News 2.7, NDTV India 1.94, Sahara 1.04, DD News .76 (source TAM June 8, All India, AB M 25+ C&S – 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Zee News covered Venus’ transit from a specially created studio, with reports from across the country including the observatory in Nainital, and from Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and other regional centres. The programming included live transit pictures and discussions with astronomers, astrologers, and live phone-ins from viewers, and also international live footage.

Among the significant stories that helped Zee News ramp up its viewership ratings were Ashok Singhal’s exclusive interview with former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee wherein he said that the Gujarat riots were responsible for BJP’s defeat in the recent Lok Sabha polls, thus leading to a churning in the BJP, says a press release issued by the channel.

Zee News has also claimed that it stole a march over its rivals during last week’s Matsyagandha Express railway accident, as well as in reporting the double-murder in Vasant Enclave in New Delhi.
