Zee goes strong at No. 3 among Hindi GECs

The two top gainers among Hindi general entertainment channels this week are Colors and Zee TV, which have seen a rise in ratings. Colors has grown from 283 to 296 GRPs, an increase of 13 points, while Zee TV has risen from 224 to 232 GRPs. Star Plus and Sony have both seen drop in ratings since Week 1 of 2011.

The first week of the year pronounced Star Plus as the leading Hindi GEC on the ratings chart with ratings close to 400 GRPs. The channel continues to lead the pack, but the second week is seeing a stabilising in ratings after the year end special programming and big ticket property, ‘Masterchef India’, closed on December 25, 2010. Another big ticket reality show that wrapped up recently was ‘Bigg Boss Season 4’ on Colors on January 8, with the finale episode pulling in a 6.7 TVR as per TAM Media Research for Hindi Speaking Markets in the CS 4+ category.

The current reality shows that will see a close combat will be Zee TV’s ‘Lux DID Doubles’ that opened this week on January 14, 2011 with a 4.7 TVR and Sony’s ‘Jhalak Dikhla Ja’, which recently premiered with 4.1 TVR. As a build-up to the grand premiere of the show on January 14, Zee extended its popular non-fiction weekend slot to every weeknight at 10:30 pm from Monday, January 10 to Thursday, January 13, giving ‘DID Doubles’ a good lead in. The audience response to the first audition episode of Zee TV’s ‘DID Doubles’ substantiates the channel’s strong belief that it is superlative dancing talent and not high-profile celebrities that really pull in the audiences.

Meanwhile, in the fiction space, Colors has launched two new shows – ‘Phulwa’ and Mukti Bandhan’ in the 9-10 pm primetime band to fill in the weekday slots left vacant by the exit of ‘Bigg Boss’ on January 8, 2011. Imagine will also be launching two new fiction shows in the coming weeks.

‘Pavitra Rishta’ is another show that has pulled in a high 6.3 TVR, second to this week’s top rated show, ‘Bigg Boss’s finale episode. ‘Pratigya’, ‘Saathiya Saath Nibhana’ and ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ continue to draw 5.5 plus ratings for Star Plus, while Colors has upped its performance with the help of its non-fiction (‘Bigg Boss’ finale) and fiction mix with ‘Na Aana Is Des Laado’ bringing in ratings similar to ‘DID Doubles’, at 4.7 TVR.
