Week 42 ratings: Sony loses ground, Colors holds on to No.2 spot

All Hindi GECs in week 42 (October 12-18, 2014) witnessed a small rise in the ratings with the exception of only one channel, Sony Entertainment Television (SET), who was suffered a loss in viewership during the week. According to data from TAM subscribers, leader Star Plus saw a marginal increase in its ratings this week to 601 million GVTs from 598 million GVTs in week 41 (October 5-11, 2014). This is due to the marginal increase in all the shows running on the channel except for new shows such as India’s Raw Star and Airlines which declined from 2.6 and 1.9 TVTs in week 41 to 2.0 and 1.5 TVTs in week 42 respectively.

At No.2 spot on the ratings chart Colors too made some gains in its ratings and grew from 433 million GVTs in week 41 to 436 million GVTs in week 42. The channel’s ratings had stayed put during the previous week. Most of the top shows running on the channel saw a slight rise in the ratings such as Comedy Nights with Kapil that increased to 6.9 TVTs in week 42 from 6.2 TVTs in week 41, Sasural Simar Ka to 6.7 TVTs in week 42 from 5.8 TVTs in week 41, Udann to 6.0 TVTs in week 42 from 5.5 TVT in week 41 and Balika Vadhu to 4.8 TVTs in week 42 from 4.4 TVTs in week 41. However, top show Bigg Boss was the one of the only shows on the channel that saw its ratings stay put at 4.4 TVTs.

Zee TV that has slipped to third place since the last few weeks too saw an increase in ratings but it was too little to dislodge Colors at No.2 spot. The channel’s ratings increased from 413 million GVTs in week 41 to 418 million GVTs in week 42. Top shows on the channel such as Jodha Akbar, Kumkum Bhagya, Jamai Raja and Qubool Hai all saw a slight incline in the ratings from 7.7, 7.0, 6.2 and 5.0 TVTs in week 41 to 8.0, 7.4, 6.6 and 5.5 TVTs in week 42 respectively. While this was so, new show Dil Se Naache Indiawaale, which has the star cast of the movie Happy New Year, saw its ratings decline marginally to 4.4 TVTs from 4.7 TVTs in its second week. This is similar to the performance of many Bollywood celebrity starrer shows on other Hindi GECs that have started off with good ratings during their first week but declined gradually.

Life OK at No.4 spot on the ratings chart increased from 292 million GVTs in week 41 to 302 million GVTs in week 42. The increase, though marginal, could only be attributed to the premiere of KICK and 2 States (which was a world television premiere) which brought in viewership of 3.3 and 2.2 TVTs respectively in week 42. These two movies scored the highest ratings on the channel during the week, while all the other shows either saw their ratings decline marginally or stay put. Savdhan India and Comedy Classes declined from 2.6 and 2.0 TVTs last week to 2.5 and 1.8 TVTs this week. Only Mahadev and Dare 2 Dance saw slight increase from 1.6 and 1.5 TVTs in week 41 to 1.8 and 1.6 TVTs in week 42 respectively.

SAB TV at No.5 spot saw a slight increase in ratings from 273 million GVTs in week 41 to 276 million GVTs in week 42. While the channel’s top two shows Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and Balveer increased from 5.8 and 2.3 TVTs in week 41 to 6.0 and 2.6 TVTs in week 42 respectively, shows such as Chidiya Ghar and Bade Door Se Aaye Hai saw slight declines to 2.1 and 2.0 TVTs in week 42 from 2.4 and 2.3 TVTs in week 41 respectively.

SET dropped from 245 million GVTs in week 41 to 228 million GVTs in week 42. This comes as a disappointment for the channel as it had managed to gain some viewership in the previous week. Most of the shows witnessed a decline in their ratings during the week. The channel’s top shows such as KBC, CID, Adalat and Crime Patrol saw their ratings dip to 3.1, 2.7, 1.9 and 1.6 TVTs in week 42 respectively from 3.6, 3.2, 3.2 and 2.0 TVTs in week 41 respectively. Maharana Veer Pratap was the only show to see a marginal increase in ratings to 2.7 TVTs this week from 2.6 TVTs in the previous week.

In the new Hindi GECs, Sony PAL saw a marginal decline in its ratings, while Zindagi saw a marginal gain. Sony Pal ratings declined from 26 million GVTs in week 42 from 25 million GVTs in week 41. Zindagi increased its viewership to 21 million GVTs in week 42 from 20 million GVTs in week 41.

Big Magic saw a dip in its ratings from last week which was 57 million GVTs in week 41 and declined to 55 million GVTs in week 42. Similarly, Sahara One declined to 11 million GVTs from 12 million GVTs in the previous week.
