The data according to TAM ratings for week 35 (August 24 -30) saw Life OK further slip to bottom of the pile, allowing SAB TV clinch the Number 5 spot despite losing a few points. Except for Colors and Star Plus, all other channels saw a dip in their ratings for the week. Life OK took a dip in the ratings from 288 million GVTs in week 34 (August 17 – 23) to 267 million GVTs in the current week. This was because no show saw a rise in the ratings in week 35. In fact, their ratings either saw a decline or stayed the same. Shows such as Savdhan India, Shapath and Hatim saw a marginal decline in ratings from 1.3, 1.0 and 0.8 TVTs in week 34 to 1.1, 0.9 and 0.7 TVTs in week 35 respectively.
SAB TV too saw a decline in ratings in week 35 from 288 million GVTs in week 34 to 281 million GVTs in week 35, but managed to get ahead. The channels showed a mixed pattern, with two shows registering marginal gains, and two other losing points. Top running show on the channel, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah saw a decline in its ratings from 2.9 TVTs in week 34 to 2.5 TVTs in week 35. While new show Chandrakant Chiplunkar also saw a decline in ratings from 1.0 TVTs in week 34 to 0.7 TVTs in week 35. The marginal rise in shows such as Baal Veer and Bade Door Se Aaye Hai from 1.0 TVTs each in week 34 to 1.1 TVTs in week 35 did not compensate for the loss on other shows.
Colors made significant strides during the week and increased to 388 million GVTs in week 35 from 377 million GVTs in week 34 to stay at the third spot. Shows such as Comedy Nights with Kapil, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Uttaran saw a rise in ratings from 3.1, 1.8 and 1.1 TVTs in the previous week to 3.3, 2.2 and 1.3 TVTs in week 35. Rest of the shows either had a marginal gain or loss of 0.1 TVT ratings. This helped push the overall ratings ahead.
Leaders Star Plus and Zee TV maintained their positions at number 1 and number 2 spot respectively on the ratings chart for the week. Star Plus ratings went up from 559 million GVTs in week 34 to 562 million GVTs in week 35. However, Zee TV slipped from 465 million GVTs in week 34 to 462 million GVTs in week 35. Many of the shows on Star Plus saw a marginal rise in the rating, however top shows such as Diya Aur Baati Hum, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Yeh Hai Mohabbatein continued to drop points and declined from 3.5, 2.8 and 2.8 TVTs in week 34 to 3.1, 2.5 and 2.5 TVTs in week 35 respectively. One of the key reasons for a top running show such as Diya Aur Baati Hum to lose points for two weeks in a row could be the similar timing (8:30 pm to 9:30 pm slot) of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) season 8 on Sony TV.
Zee TV suffered marginal losses from most of its programs except for Kumkum Bhagya and Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke which saw a rise from 3.8 and 1.8 TVTs in week 34 to 4.1 and 2.1 TVTs in week 35 respectively.
Which brings us to Sony TV (SET) which finally came out of its slumber last week and rose to the fourth spot on the ratings chart with the help of the ever-so-reliable show KBC (KBC: Sony’s knight in shining armour?). The show that got off to a remarkable start last week with 2.5 TVTs saw it drop to 2.1 TVTs this week.
New shows on the block
exchange4media had covered the launch of new shows in the Hindi GEC space (Hindi GECs launch new-show blitzkrieg). Each channel had switched to high gear and launched new shows in order to better keep up with competition. These shows were also strategically placed in order to bring in the best ratings for the channel.
Out of them KBC season 8 made the biggest splash and managed to garner ratings of 8.9 TVTs during the opening night and the following episodes in the first week delivered 5.2 TVTs. This has helped Sony TV get over the disappointment of Yudh which ended its run in week 33 with a low rating of 0.7 TVTs.
The new shows on Star Plus however have not been faring very well. Nisha Aur Uske Cousins which began in week 34 got in ratings of 1.4 TVTs and marginally increased to 1.5 TVTs in week 35. The much hyped singing talent show India’s Raw Stars didn’t even make it in the channel’s top 10 list of shows. This also goes for Airlines – Har Udaan Ek Toofan which began during week 35 itself.
Jamai Raja has been doing reasonably weak for Zee TV since it began, and has managed to get an average of 3.0 TVTs. The show saw as marginal decline in week 35 of 3.1 TVTs from 3.2 TVTs in week 34. New show Neeli Chhatri Wale which began this week in Zee TV did not get off to the best starts and only managed to get 0.9 TVTs. Considering that it is expected to replace Jodha Akbhar on the channel, it has to step up to the table and do much better in the following weeks.
Colors' two new offerings have seen mixed reactions from viewers. The Anupam Kher Show has showed promise as it managed to rake in 3.8 TVTs in week 34 from 2.4 TVTs in week 30. Whereas Shastri Sisters, which has a strong start of an average of 2.4 TVTs has now lost ground by falling to 0.8 TVTs in the current week. Udaan on the other hand has not got off to the best start and has 1.7 TVTs this week from 1.8 TVTs last week.
Life OK which launched new show Laut Aao Trisha has not really managed to get the viewers. What started off strong with 2.1 TVT’s in week 30 has not slumped to 0.7 TVTs in week 35. Life OK will be looking to launch a few more new shows during this festive season, Dare2Dance being one among them.
Finally, SAB TV which saw the launch their new show Chandrakant Chiplunkar has slumped since the beginning and now has a rating of 0.7 TVTs.
