We will continue to be No 1 as we are ahead on content: Arnab Goswami

Republic TV continued to lead the English News Genre fifth time in a row, garnering 1 million impressions, according to BARC data for Week 23 (June 3-9, 2017).

The ratings only go on to show their stronghold over the genre with their successive dominance over five weeks, says Arnab Goswami, Founder, Republic TV.

“We’re consistently the No 1 channel across all time bands for over five weeks now. We basically upset the apple cart for some existing players. The pecking order in the English News Genre has been established now with Republic TV at the top,” he adds.

It deserves mention here that on May 18, English News Channels had pulled out of BARC following the latter’s release of Republic data for its first week ignoring NBA’s plea to delay the release, only to return on May 26. The body had alleged that Republic TV resorted to rampant multiple LCN placements on cable TV networks in the country.

The controversy is definitely behind Goswami as he feels that eventually “other players have to evaluate their content”. Republic TV has continued to lead the genre after the players came back on BARC, he points out. “They will naturally complain and question. It’s all part of the game. I would be surprised if they didn’t do it, but they should stop doing it now.”

The founder is upbeat about their leadership position in the future as well. “We will continue to be No 1 because we are ahead on content. People connect with the issues that we raise and stories that we break. We don’t copy and paste material from other channels,” he says.

Goswami claims, “Republic TV’s viewership is 150 per cent greater than Times Now on average.”

On the digital front, specifically on Hotstar, Republic TV has garnered 50 million views. “Our user engagement level on content is three-four times higher than our competition,” insists Goswami.

The channel will soon get into virtual reality journalism through their digital platform Republic World, which is scheduled to launch later this month. It will provide a new monetisation channel as well. “If you see the way people are consuming us on Hotstar, it indicates the kind of interest we generate. We are going to monetise every available digital opportunity. Every single digital platform opportunity medium will be used by us,” he asserts.

“Republic World will be completely different from any of the existing news channel apps and platforms. VR is going to be a critical part. There will be many more innovations,” Goswami shares, without getting into further details.
