Vijay Awards returns to honour achievers of the Tamil film industry

Vijay Awards, Vijay TV's annual award property which honours the Tamil film fraternity, is back again. The grand awards ceremony to be held in Chennai in the third week of April would be attended by the who's who of the Tamil film industry. The show will also feature some special performances by leading actors and star performers.

As part of the on ground activity, Vijay TV would flag off a mobile van called 'Rasigan Express' on March 19, which would travel to key cities such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Erode, Tanjore and Trichy over a period of two weeks. The van would get viewers to nominate their favourite hero, heroine, director and film from among the 107 films released in 2007.

Post the nominations by the viewers via the 'Rasigan Express', the five most popular names in each of the four categories of favourite hero, heroine, director and film would be up for viewer voting through the IVR, SMS and online platforms. The jury panel for Vijay Awards comprises popular actor Bhagyaraj, film critic Madan, and actor and film analyst Lizzy Priyadarshan.

Apart from the four favourite awards, there would be 22 other awards and four special awards, which would be chosen by the jury. The four special awards are – Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Award for excellence in Cinema; an award for contribution towards the Tamil film industry; Best Entertainer (chosen by the film industry); and Icon of the Year (chosen by media agencies and clients).

Reliance Mobile Vijay Awards would also have an on-air component, airing as a weekly, featuring the journey of the Rasigan Express, the judges panel discussing the movies, and possible nominations in each category. The show would go on air in the last week of March 2008.

Sriram, Head of Vijay TV, said, "The stupendous success of Vijay Awards in 2007 and the strength and support of the Tamil film fraternity gives us the pleasure and pride to host this year's Vijay Awards. We are confident that the Awards would be a hit this year as well".

Vijay Awards is the first of its kind award show in South India where the common man gets the chance to vote for his favourite film star.
