The big players in the broadcasting space are always ready to cash in on Valentine’s Day and have been doing so for quite some time. For this year, there were the usual romantic movies, special musical shows and big Bollywood movie premiers to mark the day. However, this year some channels took an unconventional route and offered interesting line up of shows across different genres, especially for V-day.
Star World presented the first season of romantic comedy series ‘Manhattan Love Story’ while Star World Premier showcased new episodes of romantic thriller series ‘Castle’, which returned after its mid-season hiatus. Comedy Central fans were greeted with comedy shows like ‘A-Z’, ‘Awkward’, ‘Whitney’, ‘Guys with Kids and ‘Marry Me.’ FX showcased season two of Golden Globe-winning-show ‘The Affair.’
Taking the offbeat route
Colors Infinity took a different route and offered its viewers back-to-back episodes of action series ‘Arrow’ (Season 4). Even Zee Cafe had ‘Red Band Society,’ a teen medical comedy-drama television series, while AXN had an unconventional treat in the offering with the marathon of the popular fantasy horror series ‘Supernatural’ Season 11.
English movie offerings
Romedy Now, the premium English movie channel from Bennett Coleman lined up popular romantic movies like ‘Hitch’, ‘Along Came Polly’, ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, ‘Addicted to Love’, and ‘50 First Dates.’ At 9pm they premiered musical comedy drama ‘Begin Again,’ starring Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightly and Adam Levine.
Zee Studio played popular romantic movies under a special segment called Valentine Playbook like ‘Pretty Woman’ and ‘A Little Bit of Heaven.’
From Hindi entertainment players
Star Gold premiered one of 2015’s biggest hits –‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’. From Multi Screen Media stable, Hindi movie channel MAX curated a line-up of big romantic movies on February 13 and 14 like ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’, ‘ABCD2,’ and ‘Heropanti.’ For Valentine’s Day Hindi entertainment channel Star Plus celebrated with a special programme called ‘Ishkiyaon Dhishkiyaon’ featuring performances by television and Bollywood celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Yami Gautam and Pulkit Samrat.
Entertainment channel Zoom had a line-up of special shows from February 9 to 14. In one of the shows ‘Request Kiya Hai,’ viewers sent messages to their loved ones through song dedications. Also, it played the most popular 100 romantic numbers to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Music channel 9XO did something similar and played romantic songs. 9X Jalwa showcased a special series on acclaimed filmmaker Yash Chopra on February 13 and 14, while VH1 showcased some of the popular romantic English videos.
