Uday Shankar finally quits Aaj Tak

It is official now. Following weeks of media speculation, Uday Shankar, the high profile news director of Aaj Tak has finally left the Sabse Tez Channel. This has been confirmed by both Uday Shankar and Aaj Tak CEO, G Krishnan.

According to Krishnan, Uday Shankar is officially leaving Aaj Tak on January 31. Speaking to exchange4media, Uday Shankar said that he was leaving Aaj Tak to explore fresh opportunities and take up newer challenges. “It has been a great and immensely satisfying stint for me at Aaj Tak. I have a track record of not staying more than one and half year to two years at one place simply because I love new challenges. But my five-year stint at Aaj Tak had been rather too long. Nevertheless I am happy that I am leaving at a time when despite the onslaught from new news channels, Aaj Tak is still number one, way ahead of its nearest rival. “

Aaj Tak is not bringing any replacement for Uday Shakar. According to Krishnan the three executive producers – Shazi Zaman ( Aaj Tak), S Srinivasan (Headlines Today) and Sanjay Nigam (Programming) will be independently heading the charge without any news director overseeing the operations. “ We do not really need news directors for now because for the last few months we had decentralized the operations at Aaj Tak, putting the channel on autopilot. And Uday Shankar was not involved in day to day operations but was mainly part of the management,” adds Krishnan.

Meanwhile Uday Shankar neither confirmed nor denies the media buzz that he is joining Star News as Vice President. “ My options to join Star News is very much open. But at the same time I am weighing few other options in print and electronic media,” he told this correspondent. Meanwhile Star News President, Raveena Raj Kohli and Editor Sanjay Puglia could not be contacted for their comments on whether Uday Shankar was joining them.
