Two days old, Channel 7 kicks off with four news breaks

Channel 7, the new entrant in the national television news space, has made its debut with four breaking news in the first two days of being on-air. The national Hindi news channel from the Dainik Jagran stable was the first to bring to viewers the crash of the Jindals' private helicopter near Saharanpur. It was also the first to break the news about the cancellation of the India-Pakistan ODI scheduled to be played in Delhi on April 17, hours before other news channels. And it was again the first to report from the Home Ministry that the Government would everything to make the ODI happen.

Said Siddhartha Gupta, Director, Jagran TV, "It's a very proud moment for the entire Jagran Group. It's taken a lot of blood and sweat to put this baby of ours, Channel 7, together and present it as our best foot forward to the nation. There has been tremendous speculation and apprehension about Channel 7 being able to make a niche for itself in the crowded news channel market."

Day one also witnessed the controversy relating to John Wright's refusal to continue as the Indian cricket team's coach and the mantle being passed on to Sunil Gavaskar in all probability, once again a Channel 7 exclusive. The second exclusive on first day brought to viewers the news about 30 people in Bijnor being forced into slave labour in a brick furnace for the past four months.

Gupta said that Channel 7 has been able to do these exclusives because of the depth of its news gathering machinery spread over 320 districts with a network of 3,250 reporters. "Personal trials collide with professional challenges as reporters, anchors, producers and technical staff at Channel 7 strive to assemble special stories amidst a buzzing, 24-hour television newsroom," Gupta remarked.

Going on-air with live content for the first time on March 30, the channel is already available in about 15 million households, Gupta claimed. "It gives me great pride today when our competitors call in to congratulate us and to commend the channel's look, packaging, content and effort which has helped Channel 7 to set the agenda in the two days that we have been on-air. We recognize the one mantra of success in this business - sustainability," he said.
