TV screens to light up with blockbuster Diwali shows

It is the last long weekend for most Indians and this Diwali TV channels are going all out to line up special programmes to keep viewers glued to their screens.
Colors will have Comedy Nights with Kapil stars Gutthi and Palak make a special appearance in the Bigg Boss house and set certain tasks. The winners will also be given Diwali gifts sent by their family members. Apart from this, other shows such as Beintehaa, Balika Vadhu, Uttaran and Udaan will have special scenes depicting the festival.

Zee TV will have a Diwali special called ‘Saat Din Khushiyon Ke’ with celebratory content across all its primetime shows. Shah Rukh Khan is expected to have a special Diwali episode of Dil Se Naachein Indiawale. Apart from this, the channel offers a chance for viewers unable to visit their families back home to send their messages on television. Wishes and messages sent through Facebook, Twitter and of a few lucky winners will have their messages displayed on the channel from 9 am- 12 midnight from October 23-25. Also, a total of 35 channels in the ZEEL network are expected to have a Simulcast ‘Hum Nain... Umeed-e-Kashmir’ on October 26, where members of the entire film fraternity come together to appeal to people to raise funds towards the rebuilding of Kashmir post the recent floods.

&Pictures looks to give viewers something to dance about with the world television premiere of Mad About Dance on Diwali (October 23) at 8 pm. This is part of the ‘Mad About Pictures’ Film Festival property that the channel is running. Ruchir Tiwari, Deputy Business Head, Hindi Movie Channels, ZEEL, said: “We are pleased to premiere the World Television Premier of Mad About Dance, a film that is a complete entertainment package for all and an inspirational film for the youth. With a single-minded thought of bringing families together this Diwali, the film will make it more festive for our viewers.” 

Romedy Now has a line-up of movies in a property called Diwali Sparklers, that include movies such as The Family Stone, The Notebook, Guess Who, Madagascar, Monster-in-Law, Horrible Bosses, License to Wed, 17 Again, America’s Sweethearts, 28 Days, What’s Your Number and 27 Dresses. Sister channel Movies Now has a lineup that features blockbusters such as Ice Age, The Karate Kid, Kung Fu Panda, The Matrix, Olympus Has Fallen, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, all on October 23 from 9 am onwards.

Comedy Central during the Diwali weekend will premiere two new shows on the channel - SpongeBob and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The two popular series are expected to add heft to their new lineup that would include Psych, Penn and Teller: Fool Us, Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Billy on the Street.

9X Media’s Bollywood news and entertainment show 9XE will have a Diwali special with Shah Rukh Khan in a special interview with beat boxer Vineeth Vincent. Shilpa Shetty will celebrate Diwali on the channel. 9X Jhakaas, the Marathi music channel, has a special episode titled Jhakaas Dream Diwali where actor Siddarth Jadhav celebrates the festival with orphaned kids at the Vatsalya Foundation. Speaking on the Diwali special line-up on 9XM, Amar Tidke, Chief Programming Officer, 9X Media said, “Right from the Channel ident, which has a cool Rangoli treatment, to a Phataka Playlist specially curated to spread the festive spirit, 9XM is enhancing the music viewing experience. Our popular animated characters – Bade, Chote, Bheegi Billi and Betel Nuts are celebrating Diwali in their own style by pulling a fast one on each other. Another of our popular features - ‘Do Pal Ka Interval’ a Bollywood parody, is based on the biggest box-office Diwali release.”

Zing on the other hand will feature the show called Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya as their Diwali special. With the theme of love, the special Diwali programme will have Meiyang Chang and Surbhi Jyoti on the show with back-to-back episodes from 11 am to 6 pm.  

Nickelodeon has something special for kids on Diwali with the release of the movie ‘Motu Patlu Kungfu Kings’ at 12:15 pm on October 23. Nina Elavia Jaipuria, EVP & Business Head, Kids Cluster said “The franchise has grown from strength to strength through providing enhanced experiences and engaging kids across platforms like television, movies, digital assets and now consumer products. We are sure that with Motu Patlu Kungfu Kings – a movie that celebrates friendship, laughter and adventure, we will further fortify this circle of trust between Motu Patlu, the children and their favourite channel Nick.”

Big Magic also has its Big Diwali Special lined-up on Thursday from 6-10 pm with artists from Ajab Gajab Ghar Jamai, Mahisagar and Raavi coming together to celebrate the festival on the show Uff! Yeh Nadaniyaan.

With so much to watch on TV, viewers are definitely spoilt for choice.
