Turner bullish on India; forays into films, launches Hollywood movies and series’ channel

Turner Broadcasting System has announced two significant initiatives to further strengthen and expand its presence in the media and entertainment industry. The ventures include Turner’s entry into the world’s largest film industry with the launch of its animation theatrical business in India and the launch of a Hollywood movies and series’ channel with Warner Bros.

Leveraging its expertise in the kids’ genre, Turner will establish a new business unit to develop and produce animated films and expand its output of original live action television series. Targeting kids and families, this will be Turner’s maiden venture of its kind internationally.

Meanwhile, Turner’s partnership with sister company, Warner Bros, will combine the company’s considerable expertise in building and operating branded media environments in India with the prolific studio’s content and its recognised brand. The channel will bring the best of award winning Hollywood entertainment to TV sets in India, targeting the growing audience of discerning urban viewers.

Addressing the media, Steve Marcopoto, President, Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific, Inc, explained, “We believe expanding the scope of our activities and the breadth of our core channel offerings are strategic imperatives in India today. These initiatives will further bolster our considerable presence in an exciting market that is fast becoming our largest in the region.”

Further addressing on its partnership deal with the Alva Brothers, he said, “Our recent investment in Miditech and our Hindi GEC partnership with the Alva Brothers, together with today’s announcements, illustrate the accelerated pace of our company’s activities in India and our long term view of the market’s compelling potential.”

Turner’s investments come at a time when parent company Time Warner is putting greater emphasis on developing its businesses internationally with India as a priority market.

In India, Turner will now offer a bouquet of content across multiple genres that include in the kids’ television space with Cartoon Network and Pogo; news channels CNN and CNN-IBN; English entertainment channel with Warner Bros and HBO; Hindi GEC in partnership with the Alva Brothers; theatrical animations; and live action television series. Turner also has a distribution partnership with Zee Entertainment and Enterprises Ltd – Zee Turner Ltd.
