Triveni Media to launch Voice of India Bangla channel by July-end 2008

Close on the heels of launching its Hindi news channel Voice of India, Triveni Media Ltd, the fully-owned subsidiary of real estate and infrastructure group Triveni Infrastructure Development Co Ltd, is now gearing up to expand its channel portfolio with a Bengali news channel, VOI Bangla. The channel is slated to be launched by July-end 2008.

The VOI Bangla launch would be followed by other regional language launches, namely VOI Gujarati, VOI Rajasthan, VOI Uttar Pradesh, and VOI Madhya Pradesh; lifestyle-luxury channel VOI Millionaire; and music channel VOI Music.

Abhijit Dasgupta has been roped in as Managing Editor of VOI Bangla. He has been associated with news since the early sixties and with the television media for over three decades.

Dasgupta is an alumnus of the Film & TV Institute of India, Pune. He was also trained at the BBC London, AIBD Malaysia, NDR Germany, ABC (Australia). He took voluntary retirement from Doordarshan as Station Director in 1995. He had been Bureau Chief at WTN (Worldwide Television News) and was Production-in-Charge at ESPN. Dasgupta was also Executive Director of Tara Bangla.

Commenting on VOI Bangla, Dasgupta said, “We will definitely showcase the voice of the people. Our aim is to become the most credible, reliable, unbiased and balanced channel. We will give importance to news – unadulterated news. The Bengali news channel scenario has space for more channels, in fact, the more, the better, as it will create a healthy competition.”

VOI Bangla has also got its key people in place. Pradipta Shankar Sen has been appointed as Executive Editor. Sen has worked with publication houses like The Statesman, Business Standard and The Hindustan Times in senior positions. He has over eight years’ experience in the electronic media.

Production embellishments for the channel would be handled by Saikat Ghosh, who has produced several news programmes for WTN, and live telecasts for ESPN. He has also worked on several episodes for Doordarshan as also other satellite channels.

As Business Head, Umesh Roychoudhury would handle the sales part of the channel. Prior to this, Roychoudhury was handling sales for Aakaash Bangla in Mumbai.

Direct Response Kolkata has been assigned the communication mandate for VOI Bangla channel.
