Tata Sky names 13 Zee bouquet channels to be dropped following TDSAT order

Direct-to-home service provider Tata Sky has decided on the 13 channels that it would drop from the Zee bouquet. While Zee had insisted that Tata Sky would have to take the entire bouquet of 32 channels, Tata Sky wanted only 19. In a ruling that can change the way DTH service providers choose and provide channels to customers, TDSAT adjudicated that Tata Sky is in no way obliged to carry all the 32 channels on their service.

The channels which have been discontinued by Tata Sky as a result of the TDSAT order are 24Ghanta, Play TV, Zee Jagran, Zee Smile, Zee Music, Zee Kannada, Zee Telegu, Zee Sports, ETC Punjabi, ETC, Zee Premier, Zee Action and Zee Classic.

TDSAT had held in its order of March 31, 2007, that if a DTH operator was forced to take all of a broadcaster’s channels and pay for them, it would naturally pass on the cost to the consumer. "Competition has to be encouraged because it is in consumer interest," said TDSAT.
