Tara Marathi, the Marathi language channel promoted by Rathikant Basu’s Broadcast Worldwide (BW), is planning to take on the dominance of soap operas in the prime-time band with distance education programmes.
Starting August 15, Tara Marathi’s sole content provider, Eternal Dreams, will air 150 minutes of programming for various certified vocational courses between 6:30—9:00 pm on Tara Marathi. Eternal Dreams is planning to use Hindi as the medium of instruction for the programmes to cover a wider audience.
The company is also in talks with other channels including Doordarshan for airing these distance-education programmes, senior executives said.
The courses proposed to be launched are for cookery (separate for vegetarian & non-vegetarian), bakery, international cooking, food and beverage service, English speaking course, customer relations and housekeeping. There can be a maximum of five classes of 30 minutes duration each day.
The duration of the proposed courses will be 10 weeks, and examinations for a particular course will be conducted after 3 weeks of course completion. Course fees are currently in the range of Rs 1,999-3,999.
However, Eternal Dreams’ and Tara Marathi’s revenues will only come from advertisements, as most of the course fee will go towards the course material, training and conducting exams.
