Sun TV too knocks on TDSAT's door for ad cap reprieve

As the October 1 deadline for implementation of the 10+2 ad cap approaches, broadcasters are going all out to stall the process. In a latest development, Sun TV has filed an appeal with the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) seeking exemption from implementing the ad cap on October 1.

Sun TV filed the appeal on September 25, 2013 and is waiting to hear from the Tribunal on its appeal.

Earlier, four music channels – Mastiii, 9XM, MTunes, and B4U – had filed a petition against the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) order on ad cap, following which, TDSAT imposed a stay on the TRAI order till the next hearing on October 21, 2013.

As is known, news broadcasters have already got exemption from implementing the ad restriction till the next hearing on November 11, 2013. TDSAT has instructed TRAI not to take any ‘coercive steps’ against the channels. The interim order came in response to an appeal by the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) after 17 television channels received summons from a Delhi court for non-compliance of an advertisement cap.
