Star-ABP combine gears up to launch Bengali news channel 'Star Ananda'

Media Content & Communications Services India Pvt. Ltd (MCCS), a 74:26 per cent joint venture between ABP TV and Star Group, that manages the Star News channel, is all set to launch a 24-hour Bengali news channel. Though ABP Group officials are tightlipped, the name of the channel is likely to be 'Star Ananda', which leverages the strong Star and Anandabazar Patrika brand names.

While spokespersons of both ABP and Star are tight-lipped about the launch plans, it is gathered that they are almost finalized. The launch advertising campaign will be handled by Bates Kolkata, which is also the agency for Anandabazar Patrika, the group's flagship Bengali daily with circulation of over ten lakhs. ABP TV is a 100 per cent subsidiary of ABP Group.

Suman Chattopadhay, till recently the editor of Anandabazar Patrika, will be in-charge of the Benglai news channel's editorial content. The channel will have an international and national focus which will differentiate it from the local channels that are currently available. In fact, one of these channels, Tara has introduced a dedicated news channel recently.

Apart from the two dailies, Anandabazar Patrika and The Telegraph, the ABP Group also publishes the business magazine Businessworld, as well several leading Bengali magazines such as Desh and Sananda. Backed by the reach and credibility of Anandabazar on the one hand, and Star's expertise in the electronic media on the other, Star Ananda is sure to make an impact as far viewership of Bengali channels go.
