Samaya 24x7 takes off; media planners wonder if it can differentiate itself in a strong field

The Kannada news channel space witnessed quite some activity with the launch of Samaya 24x7. The channel, which had long been awaiting takeoff, was formally launched this Sunday by Dr Devi Shetty. The channel is the brainchild of industrialist and politician Satish Jarakihole.

Talking about the launch, MK Ananda Raje Urs, consultant to the channel, said, “Samaya 24x7 is a current affairs and news channel. The objective is to present unbiased and in-depth issues related to the people and state. The channel takes pride in the fact that it is not pro any political party, but the only aim is to stay committed to the people of the state and bring their plight, concerns and issues to the fore and get them social justice.”

He added, “We have got good response on the look and feel of the channel and the reception has been good.”

Samaya 24x7 is an Electronic Media Division (EMD) of Satish Sugars Ltd (SSL). Their Facebook page states: Samaya TV is an ambitious attempt in line with the vision of empowering society through education, information, entertainment and redressal of grievances using the power of media.

Expressing his view on the launch of yet another Kannada news channel, Anil Sathiraju, Associate VP and Head South, Mudra Connext, said, “There are strong contenders like TV 9, Suvarna 24 X7, ETV News, Udaya Varthegalu and the likes, which already exist in this market. So then the question is – what is the new channel offering that is different from the rest, be it extensive coverage of local happenings or something exclusive that will make people watch this channel. The offering in Kannada language is also between 15 and 18 channels, so what will make a loyal viewer switch to a news channel that’s just been launched is worth pondering.”
