Ravina Kohli may head Star News

Ravina Kohli, former chief executive officer of HFCL-Nine Broadcasting India, is set to head Star News. Even as the divorce between Star and the content supplier NDTV is to be announced soon, the network has decided to rope in the high profile Ms Kohli. According to sources, the terms of the contract have been almost agreed upon and an announcement is expected to be made soon.

Star has decided to set up its own news bureau besides sourcing content from suppliers of programmes. The channel head will be responsible for building a team. According to source, It will be a combination of content from our bureaus and other production houses.

According to industry sources, Star was looking at a fresh face rather than getting a journalist to head the channel. Though Ms Kohli has no experience in news, she was believed to be responsible for the success of Sony Entertainment Television where she worked as the programming and marketing head. Her next hop was equally significant as she joined the Australian media mogul Kerry Packer’s Indian venture.

Star has decided to have a predominantly Hindi news channel. According to sources, Star has a year to build an inhouse team as its contract with NDTV for sole and exclusive news content expires only in March 2003.
