Prasar Bharati-Canal France International agreement, DD to telecast French films

Film buffs will now be able to get a more varied and rich fare on Doordarshan with the telecasting of 26 French Films over a period of six months. These films will be supplied free of cost by French broadcaster - Canal France International (CFI).

French feature and television films, mainly comedies featuring celebrity actors will be shown every Friday at 11 p.m. from July 5 on DD Metro Channel. These films will be dubbed or subtitled in English. Six of these films - 'An Indian in the City', 'Fanfan the Tulip', 'Witch Way Love', 'The Hickers', 'The Black Tulip' and 'Damned Nuiisance', have already been cleared by CBFC for telecast. Doordarshan DG Dr. S.Y. Quraishi, French Ambasador, Bernard Montferrand, Audio Visual Attache, French Embassy, Patrick Medalin and DDG, Doordarshan, in-charge of DD Metro, K. Thalanthanga formally announced the tie up.

According to Dr. Quraishi, under the first phase of the agreement, while CFI will supply films free of cost, Doordarshan will be collecting the entire revenue generated by marketing these films. Currently, Doordarshan gets films from NFDC on a royalty of Rs. 2.5 lakh. At this rate, Doordarshan will be saving Rs. 65 lakh on the procurement of French films, besides generating commercial revenue from their marketing.

In the second phase of the telecast of French films, Prasar Bharati and CFI will however enter into a revenue sharing arrangement. According to Bernard Montferrand, CFI is looking at possible co-productions with Prasar Bharati to enhance partnership between Indian and French producers and directors.

Meanwhile Prasar Bharati has already entered into a co-production arrangement with BBC World Service Trust for a Youth Show 'Haath Se Haathi Milaa'. This entertainment series on AIDS with technical support from National Aids Control Organisation will be telecast on Delhi Plus Relay Transmitters on DD 1 from July 6. BON viewing!
