Orkut is Pepsi & MTV Youth Icon 2007

It might have gained notoriety following the Adnan Patrawala murder case, but the youth of India have wholeheartedly voted for ‘Orkut’. The social networking forum emerged as the undisputed winner of the Pepsi & MTV Youth Icon 2007.

Apart from Orkut, the nominees this year included Abhishek Bachchan, ‘Rang De Basanti’, multimedia cellphone and ‘you’. Orkut joins the league of Mahendra Singh Dhoni (winner in 2006), Shah Rukh Khan (2005), Rahul Dravid (2004), and Anil Ambani (2003).

Named after Orkut Buyukkokten, its Turkish creator, the social networking forum was launched in early 2004. Orkut is run by Google that helps users meet new friends and keep up with the old ones.

Manu Rekhi, Product Manager, Google, said, “This award is a testimony to the spirit of the Indian youth, and their eagerness to connect and express themselves with freedom and enthusiasm. Google is delighted to offer this platform to the youth of India and play a part in helping their creative, constructive energy grow, fizz and bubble over. We thank Pepsi and MTV for the recognition that Orkut is achieving what it set out to do – bring together people from around the world who share common interests, views and values.”

Punita Lal, Executive Director-Marketing, Pepsi, said, “The coming together of Pepsi and MTV always spells out excitement, and that’s what the ‘Pepsi & MTV Youth Icon 2007’ was all about from the inception. We’re excited to see that eventually an idea has taken over as icon and we congratulate to Orkut for scrapping the other nominees to emerge the undisputed winner.”
