Maharashtra1, a new 24 hour Marathi News channel, has been launched with veteran journalist Nikhil Wagle as the Editor-in-Chief. The channel, which was first announced last year, officially started its broadcast from January 1, 2016.
“The channel represents common man in Maharashtra and dares to voice the truth and untouched issues with ‘Fearless Attitude’. We have the best team of Marathi News television; especially into politics and investigation reporting. This is a perfect mix of young and experienced team. We will do serious, people-centric journalism,” said Wagle on the launch.
The Marathi TV news genre is already crowded with Zee 24 Taas, ABP Majha, IBN Lokmat, TV9 Marathi, Mi Marathi and Jai Maharashtra. When asked about the impact the new channel would make, Wagle said he would be targeting the top position within one year. “I am sure that within six months we will be among the top three channels in the Marathi news space and within one year of launch, we will be competing to be at the top,” he claimed.
The branding and marketing of the channel is taken care by Adbhoot Creatives --- a creative strategy design company that specializes in broadcast designing and branded TV content.
Vaibhav Pandit, The Founder and Creative Director of Adbhoot said, “Adbhoot is part of this entire project from day one. The brief we are following is very clear i.e. Be relevant and differentiate the brand in every sense. We wanted to break the stereotype packaging style, channel IDs and OAP. From channel tagline to music to colour scheme to packaging to on-air promotion is differentiating channel at first look. ”
He further added, “Adbhoot has carefully selected The Tagline – ATA JAG BADALEL (Now world will change!), a very positive and progressive approach, keeping in mind sentiments & belief of viewers. This reflects in content also as Editor in chief Nikhil Wagle is a differentiator himself when it comes to approach towards journalism. ”
The channel is managed by Fearless Media, which is led by Sanjay Sharma, CEO of Fearless Media & ex- COO IBN Lokmat. Sharma says, “As a viewer you will definitely feel a difference in the first look itself. Maharashtra1 will also stand apart as a channel which provides straight forward, fearless and absolute news. It will target the Marathi speaking urban & rural audience.”
In a first for the TV news industry, the channel will have no OB van. Instead, it will use BackPacks, which will allow reporters to relay the news live. “Given the change in technology with BackPacks and the ease of use and the stability that has come with these technologies, the concept of OB van has become redundant,” Sharma noted.
The channel has retained Wagle’s Trademark Shows – Aajcha Sawal and Great Bhet. The channel programming also includes distinctive shows on issues touching lives of common Maharashtrians.
