The News Broadcasters Association (NBA) was called for an emergency meeting on Saturday, April 25, 2009 with all editorial heads from both print and electronic media. The meeting was to discuss some undesirable content that was aired and written about by IBN7, The Times of India, Mail Today and Asian Age. The meeting also included dignitaries from MOS, RAW, I&B Ministry, IB Chief, Home Secretary and NBA Secretary General Annie Joseph.
On April 23 there was a news report that was aired on IBN7 at 11 pm, which reportedly breached the guidelines given by NBA to news channels. The same information also appeared in print the following day in The Times of India, Mail Today and Asian Age. The news breached that guideline that states: “There should be no coverage that discloses confidential information involving national security”.
NBA at the meeting had asserted that an immediate action would be taken. When contacted, all NBA’s Annie Joseph would said was, “I have nothing to say on this.”
A senior official close to the development, meanwhile, said, “The meeting did happen and it was discussed how such situations should be tackled. If it is against national interest, then it should not be aired or written about.”
At the meeting, the NBA had assured that as per the self regulation, the Association would take necessary action. However, any such action is yet to be seen. The NBA board meeting is slated for May 4, 2009. The concern is whether Justice Verma, Chairman of NBA, would take the necessary action as promised by the NBA Secretary General at the meeting on April 25, 2009.
